VICTORIA,TX: YMCA of the Golden Crescent announced that registration starts at the end of May for their weekly Teen Biology/Microbiology Lab which begins July 7th. The Teen Biology/Microbiology Lab will be for ages 12 – 18 and the sessions will be held Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. on the YMCA’s SHTEAM Bus. The program is a basic introduction to general biology which will provide students with a foundation of the study of life. Cost to participate is $45 monthly for YMCA members or $60 monthly for community members; participants must register prior to the first session of each month at the YMCA of the Golden Crescent or register online here: https://ymcagoldencrescent.org/barbara-bauer-briggs-family/programs/enrichment/
The weekly lab sessions will be held on the SHTEAM bus (the YMCA of the Golden Crescent’s innovative educational vehicle designed to use Science, Health, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) to guide students’ critical thinking and create a dialogue that could lead to the future fulfillment of industry jobs.
This program is a basic introduction into general biology and the study of life and will also touch on the sub-discipline, microbiology, which is the study of microorganisms. Students will have the opportunity to work with microscopes, as well as culture their own microbes along with other fun lab activities. “We are thrilled to offer this biology/microbiology lab to area students,” said William “Bud” Oliver, CEO of the YMCA of the Golden Crescent.

“This will be a hands-on learning experience where students will learn about cells, bacteria, scientific lab techniques and perform their own experiments!” said Oliver. Oliver shared that this class will be a head start into the basics of biology and microbiology in a fun and interactive setting.
JT Munoz, Sports and Teen Programs Director, shared about the other Enrichment programs offered at the YMCA of the Golden Crescent. “Many know the YMCA as a wellness facility, youth sports organizer, and/or childcare service provider. And, while we certainly are fulfilling those needs, we also offer diverse programming through our Enrichment programs,” said Munoz. “Our Enrichment Program includes the Teen Biology/Microbiology Lab as well as Art Programs with Art Instructor Claire Santellana, Teen 3D Printing and Anatomage Programs, and Guitar Lessons.”
Munoz shared that registration for Guitar Lessons, Teen Monthly Art Lab, Art Adventures, and 3D Printing and Anatomage Programs is currently open for the June sessions. The Teen Biology/Microbiology registration will open at the end of May. “We want our area children and teens to explore new areas like learning the guitar, explore art, dive into biology and more!” said Munoz. He encourages those interested to learn more about the Enrichment Programs to visit www.ymcagoldencrescent.org, email [email protected] or call (361) 575-0511.
